Zinc Bar Stock

Eastern Alloys offers Continuous Cast (Con-Cast) Zinc Bar stock for prototyping and short run production requirements. Prototyping is a very important stage in product development as it helps engineers determine if parts can be made from the alloy being tested. Benefits of prototyping with Zinc bar stock can include:

  • Prototyping die castings with bar stock is quick and simple, giving end users fast testing results.
  • Prototyping helps eliminate costly retooling procedures required when parts fail during prelimnary testing.  Changes can be made to the part instead of the tool.
  • If prototyping is not used, the end user may give up on the product design after the first round of testing because of the added time and expense of retooling the production die for additional protyping samples.

Machining prototype from con-cast zinc bar stock is a fast, simple and easy approach - producing very similar properties as actual zinc die castings. The material is readyily available, so there is typically not a long lead time, there is no wait for tooling to be machine, and the bar stock can be used for functional testing as well as aesthetic properties (plating, powder coating, etc.)

Properties

The following table gives the properties of Con-Cast parts compared to Die Casting and Sand Casting processes.  As shown, the con-cast zinc bar stock properties are very similar to the die casting component, with the exception of elongation.  If elongation is a required property to the design, ageing ZA-12 gives similar properties to a Zamak 3 die casting.

AlloyUTS (ksi)Yield (ksi)Elongation (%)Brinell Hardness (500/10/30)
Zamak 3 (con-cast)45.638.11.6101
Zamak 3 (die cast)41.0321082
