Eastern Alloys offers Continuous Cast (Con-Cast) Zinc Bar stock for prototyping and short run production requirements. Prototyping is a very important stage in product development as it helps engineers determine if parts can be made from the alloy being tested. Benefits of prototyping with Zinc bar stock can include:
Machining prototype from con-cast zinc bar stock is a fast, simple and easy approach - producing very similar properties as actual zinc die castings. The material is readyily available, so there is typically not a long lead time, there is no wait for tooling to be machine, and the bar stock can be used for functional testing as well as aesthetic properties (plating, powder coating, etc.)
The following table gives the properties of Con-Cast parts compared to Die Casting and Sand Casting processes. As shown, the con-cast zinc bar stock properties are very similar to the die casting component, with the exception of elongation. If elongation is a required property to the design, ageing ZA-12 gives similar properties to a Zamak 3 die casting.
Alloy | UTS (ksi) | Yield (ksi) | Elongation (%) | Brinell Hardness (500/10/30) |
Zamak 3 (con-cast) | 45.6 | 38.1 | 1.6 | 101 |
Zamak 3 (die cast) | 41.0 | 32 | 10 | 82 |
ZA-12 (con-cast) | 67.8 | 53.3 | 2.5 | 130 |
ZA-12 (HT con-cast) | 45.5 | 35.6 | 11 | 93 |
ZA-12 (die cast) | 58.5 | 46.5 | 5.5 | 100 |
Zinc con-cast bar stock comes in a variety of sizes and shapes including round stock diameters ranging from 3/4" Diameter to 9" and rectangular bar stock sections of 5/8" to 8". Please contact us to discuss which bar stock alloy and size best fits your requirements.
